Bonderman returns to Detroit
Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman was called up from an injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, brought up with five other players by manager Jim Leyland to fill out September’s expanded rosters.
Bonderman has made only one appearance since undergoing surgery to correct a blood clot in his throwing elbow last season, lasting only four innings in a loss to the Chicago White Sox in June. He was put on the disabled list again following the start, starting his rehab assignment soon after. He was 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in 13 appearances in Toledo.
Leyland said that the 26 year-old Bonderman would pitch for the Tigers during their run at the AL Central title, but indicated that there was “no chance” of him starting.
A once-promising starting pitcher, Bonderman’s career has been bogged down with four trips to the DL since June 2008. His 202 strikeouts during the Tigers’ run to the 2006 World Series was the most since Jack Morris in 1987.
