The Detroit Tigers sign Freddy Garcia

The Tigers have signed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. He will pitch in A-Ball and be a teammate of Dontrelle Willis’. After a couple of starts the Tigers will re-evaluate Garcia and they will likely promote him then if he looks good. Garcia pitched in 11 games (all starts) last season for the Phillies before he was injured and he was 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. The Tigers hope that Garcia returns to the form that made him one of the better righty starting pitchers in the game before last season. Garcia has now pitched in 263 games (262 starts) in his major league career and he is 117-76 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. It will be interesting to see if Garcia helps the Tigers in September but it was still a risk worth taking.
